While the TECH Art Studio has not always been a part of the TECH story, arts and crafts has. Each day, this was a highlight for individuals participating in the ALS Day Service program and we knew there was an opportunity to expand what we could offer.

TECH has always worked hard to find ways to create opportunities for those we serve and because of the tenacity by former CEO, Brenda Maxey, we introduced the idea of painting silk scarves and ties. Soon after, local artist, Julie Black, began teaching art classes, which affectionately became known as “TECH Tuesday” to TECH and the community.

In 2016, 3 years after moving to our new Adult Life Skills building, we were able to fulfill a vision of having a true Art Studio for our TECH Artists’ to paint in thanks to a generous gift from a donor. This space has inspired some of the most incredible work and has been a haven for people across TECH to express themselves in ways that we can only imagine.

Shining a Light on Stan’s Natural Talent

When TECH Tuesday took hold at the ALS, Stan Balman was one of the first in line to participate in the program. Up until that point, Stan had been spending a majority of his week at the TECH Work Center, helping with a variety of contracts and jobs that needed to be fulfilled. While Stan loved working, he also knew that he wanted to slow down a bit and have more leisure time.

Stan’s natural artistic talent was quickly brought to light and he developed his skills over the course of time from the early days of TECH Tuesday to painting in the TECH Art Studio with our Art Coaches. “In the Art Studio, Stan takes great pride in his work,” says Dorinda Simmons, Manager of the ALS and TECH Art Program. “He is always eager and willing to learn new skills and is extremely patient with what can be very tedious processes.”

Stan loves to paint trucks and automobiles, making himself known for this subject matter in the community. Throughout the years, Stan has painted several pieces that were used for a variety of awards locally here at TECH as well as through InterHab, our state association. Stan has also entered numerous pieces of art at the Kansas State Fair and taken home ribbons for his work.

“He has a true natural talent for painting. That skill set along with his patience and determination allows him to create anything he puts his mind to,” says Simmons.
